Heart Rate Monitor

How much importance to you attach to following a heartrate monitor during runs/skis/paddles?
It's a great tool to monitor quite a few things. Once you become familiar with your heart rates, using the monitor is an excellent way to gauge your efforts vs. what percentages you are trying to work at. As well it is also a good way to monitor your training level and how well your body is recovering throughout the week.
