Muscle Groups

Heya! Question for professionals:What is the most important muscle groups in canoeing to what we should get most attention at the weight training in order to improve performance and technique?

Well, that's a hard question, as there could be a lot of different answers. You hear people say it all the time, but core strength is very important in canoeing. It helps you stay stable during your stroke and allows you to use your big muscles properly throughout the race. It also prevents a lot of injuries, which is very important in our sport. Keeping all your shoulder muscles strong is also important, as shoulder problems can be a big problem for canoers.

I guess a more simple answer would be to have a really strong back and lats. Most successful canoers around the world have some pretty massive lats for their size, one often bigger than the other.

Oh, and calf raises are absolutely essential, and are in fact the secret to going fast, but keep that on the down low.
